Hello from far Eastern Oregon and welcome to OwyheeStar Weimaraners Website that is all about "The Blues". When we say "The Blues" we are not speaking of music, colors, or your outlook on life. We are speaking of the lovely Weimaraner coat color that is referred to as "Blue".
Originally, we only raised silver gray or gray Weims. We still love the durable all-around gray color but more recently have also grown fond of the blues. Like the grays, the blues come in all shades from a darker midnight blue to a lighter silvery blue. In general, colors tend to be lighter when first born and darken with maturity.
Some have said the "The Blue Weims" have more health issues, however, we have not noticed a real difference. Like the Grays and Silvers many are prone to allergic reactions. Some of the allergies are more severe than others. Early-on we have noticed more minor skin infections telling us that their immune system seems to develop more slowly. (We want to emphasize minor meaning a few bumps on the skin--some pimples on the face.) This does not appear to be an on-going problem in "The Blues" as far as we can tell. Some silver and gray Weims also get these minor skin infections.
If you are a serious hunter, then a blue might not be the best choice if you are picky about the looks of your Weim. "The Blues" do tend to scar up a bit more than the traditional gray colors. For the more casual hunter this is a non-issue and "The Blues" hunt the same as any color Weim--if they are from strong hunt lines. When they get a cut many times once it is healed you will find a series of white hairs growing in that area. If the "Grays" and "Silvers" get these white hairs they are not as noticable.
The popularity of "The Blue Weimaraner" seems to be growing by leaps and bounds. We get more and more inquiries. We have spent the last five years working on developing a "Quality Blue Weimaraner" program. The testimonials we have lead us to believe we have achieved success. We will continue to work towards improving our lines--both pet and hunts lines.
